What components, according to your book, go into an introduction and conclusion?

According to the book the introduction is suppose to contain something that catches the audience’s attention. It should also explain the thesis and what the main points are. The ending should be a summary about the main points that were just presented. I’m going to use the idea of finding something interesting to grab my audience’s attention with a fact not many people may know about. For my introduction I plan to talk about the basic nutrition information then talk about a certain topic about nutrition many people may not know about. For my conclusion after I summarize my main points I will look for a dramatic fact to end with like the book suggested.

  1. I agree that a surprising statistic grabs the audience's attention with ease. Your attention grabber sounds like it is going to be shocking because nutrition is a very concerning problem especially in America. Perhaps your attention grabber can be a statistic that compares obesity from one decade ago to a statistic of America's obesity today. I am sure that there is an obvious difference. Are you planning on talking about nutrition in other countries as well? If so, nutrition statistics from third world countries can also be a beneficial attention getter. Perhaps you should think of a specific example of a dramatic fact for your conclusion even if it is just "food for thought". Carol wanted specific examples. Good luck Niko :).

  2. I think this chapter did a good job of reviewing the purpose of the introduction and conclusion. I agree with you that the introduction should have an attention grabber as well as a thesis stating your main points of the speech. I think you should talk about the basic nutrition infromation in one of your main topics but in the introduction I think it is best if you think of a creative attention grabber that explains what your speech is going to be about. Also I think the dramatic effect you are going for at the end of your speech is a great idea. Good luck!

  3. Hello Niko! Do you know exactly how you are going to use each of the required components for the intro and conclusion? How exactly do you plan on building your credibility at the start of the speech and throughout? Also, from hearing past speeches, what were the most effective attention getters you noticed? Did you notice any highly effective conclusions? :)
