Chapter 14 concept
I thought the question of value is interesting. People base their opinions on their values and cultural beliefs instead of facts. Most of the topics using question of value are based on things like moral of war and ethical uses of facebook according to the book. I find this concept interesting because most of time when we decide about something it’s more likely that we base it on what we believe in and not on facts. Even though it is on a subject we know that might be wrong, if we like it then we will believe it is right. For example killing insects, they are disgusting and it should okay to kill them but there’s also how the world needs insects for the ecosystem. Most people would want to kill bugs because they are annoying and gross and it’s just based on their opinions.

Choosing a topic on the question of value is interesting. I agree that when we decipher about something, we use more of our values and what we are taught to make these decisions. Facts are useful all and all because they are generally true, but our first instinct is to use our values and beliefs. I like your example because it can actually be used as a speech topic. Although some people believe that bugs are creepy and crawly and deserve to be extinguished, some people also know that they are significant to the ecosystem. It is all a matter of values and perspectives.
ReplyDeleteThe question of value does sound interesting. It’s true that people do base their opinions on their values and cultural beliefs than opening their minds to facts. We also tend to go by our own morals, beliefs, and word of the mouth than facts too. I’m glad you gave an example of killing insects and what a majority of people would actually think of insects based off their opinions. But other than that, people need to always give something a chance and be all ears. Being open minded allows you to absorb facts besides values and beliefs. For the last speech, being persuasive, people will definitely base their opinions on the topics they’re going to listen to.
ReplyDeleteI agree this was interesting concept, I think it’s funny how people base their opinions on beliefs and customs instead of facts. I can think about a few times when I have done this, it’s obviously not valid to make arguments this way but it is common. The example you used about bugs, I thought was really good, you made a good point. There are other several examples if this; many of them are very common. For example gay marriage some people oppose to it because of their religion, but they are not really looking at all the facts or reasoning behind it.
ReplyDeleteHey Niko,
ReplyDeleteI found this concept really interesting too. It is very true that people base thier beliefs and opinions on thier cultures, and values, instead of actual facts. Its important to keep that in mind when developing your speech. It will help you find a better way to persuade your audience. People should try to remember to listen to the facts though before they decide to bleive or dis-belive in something as well. Well, good luck with your final speech.
