Recent discussion

My recent discussion was just a few minutes ago when my friend was arguing with me how I always round off time wrong and that comparing it to normal rounding off things. I usually like to look at time by the every half hour and hour. I feel that minutes go by too fast so anything past thirty minutes is basically an hour already. My friend says that way off and that my reasoning is wrong. I used analogical reasoning by comparing my rounding off my test score to minutes in time. My reasoning did not go well because my friend kept giving more examples and made my reasoning fail.

  1. Well Niko, I did not think that your reasoning failed. It was merely that it was difficult to compare rounding off time to rounding off a test score. Although analogical reasoning involves comparing two almost unlike things, you should be aware of all the similarities that is potentially there. I believe minutes only go by quickly if you restrict yourself from looking at the time frequently. Otherwise, time will go by extremely slowly if you look at it every minute or so. This argument seemed like it posed a good exercise for using reasoning. Hopefully it will benefit you in your next speech.

  2. I have never thought of anything past thirty minutes is basically an hour already, haha, but I do round time too! Let say it's 12:17, I'll just round it to 12:20, because I kind of have OCD and I need to go by fives or even numbers. Your friend kind of reminds me of my friend back home because they keep giving more examples until they prove they're right. Referring to Piper's comment, it's true minutes only go by quickly if you restrict yourself from looking and time will go by extremely slow if you take a look every minute.

  3. Hi Niko,
Well I think I am a lot like you in the sense that I like to round off time as well. Most people however, tend to round the same way as Kai by even numbers or by 5s. I on the other hand agree with you that minutes do go by fast and it makes more sense to be to round after 30 minutes. I think you did a good job with your analogical reasoning but I just think that it was hard to persuade your friend because this is an opinion of yours and you can not really give facts to back your argument. Maybe next time try a topic where it is more factual rather than opinionated.

  4. Hello Niko!
I do the same thing most of the time when someone asks me the time. I usually do it by even numbers, and/or by 5s like Beautiful had stated. I always tend to say I would start something at a specific time like 6:30 or 2:45 haha its a habit! I don't think you had failed on your reasoning at all. Maybe your friend wasn't really open to the idea. If we started eating at 8:00pm, and it was 8:46pm when we finished eating then I would tell my friend we've been in the restaurant for on hour! So it really all depends on everyones perspective, but I don't think its a topic where someone should persuade you to stop doing it.
