What makes you apprehensive about public speaking?

In chapter 2 it talked about illusion of transparency and how people believe that others are watching them closely even though they aren’t. I have the illusion of transparency and I get scared and nervous when I’m on the spot light about to give a speech. I’m also generally one of those quiet and shy people, sometimes I get nervous just talking to strangers. The book said practicing a lot will help the speaker gain more confidence. In the past I’ve never practice a lot for my speeches or presentations, the most was like 3 times afterward I just felt like I’m ready. Then on the day of presentation I start doubting myself and I lose confidence.

  1. For me its definitely like that for speeches or speaking up in a class. There I times when I do just fine and there others times when I lose confidence and speak really low. So I do understand how you feel when your nervous to be the center of attention for a speech. What is nice about blogging is that I guess it gives us students a chance to read about other student’s experiences and I find we all have similar problems, which helps alleviate more of that fear. I just hope by presentation day I can still keep this in mind and be less nervous.

  2. Hi Niko! You wouldn't believe the amount of people that think they are being judged when they really aren't. The key here is to focus on your message. What is the message you want your audience to receive? Trying to focus on that versus what you 'think' they are thinking about you will help your anxiety a bit. :)
